Testimonials

Orthopaedic surgery is often life changing, and this is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. This is shown by the many letters of thanks that I have been fortunate to receive, a selection of which are shown (with permission) below.

All feedback on the care I provide is important to me. For that reason, I also invite patients to leave a Google review of their experience by clicking here.

I found Mr McLauchlan to be very informative at the consultation and he explained the clinical findings.  We discussed the surgical options and he fully explained what the surgery entailed.  I was given the opportunity to ask any questions which were also fully answered. The nursing care at Fulwood Hall Hospital was very good and everything went well both during my Outpatient and Inpatient time there. Following the operation Mr McLauchlan explained everything that had been carried out during the surgery and showed me the x-rays. I am very pleased with the results following my surgery. Before the operation l suffered significant pain to my knee. Following my operation and quick recovery time l have not suffered any pain at all.  I would recommend Mr McLauchlan to others contemplating knee surgery.

In the last five years I have had to have both knee and hip replacements. I have been fortunate to have Mr McLauchlan perform both procedures at Fulwood Hall Hospital via NHS referral. During the consultation phases I found Mr McLauchlan to be extremely informative, patient and highly approachable with a friendly and exceptionally professional demeanour.  Both operations were highly successful and the postoperative care and follow up appointments were exemplar.  I have no hesitation in recommending Mr McLauchlan and his team at Fulwood Hall-hospital to anyone requiring similar surgery.

I have been attending Mr McLauchlan's clinics, at Royal Preston initially then Chorley and District Hospital, and latterly at Fulwood Hall Hospital, on and off for the past fifteen years. I have also attended Mr McLauchlan's clinic with my late Husband Derek.  We decided that he would choose Mr McLauchlan for his second replacement knee, following the care I received with my first knee replacement in August 2003. Following this operation I was put on his Research List, which ended in 2014. I have always found Mr McLauchlan pleasant, approachable, trustworthy, conscientious, treats one with dignity, respects your concern; especially when another serious problem arose only days before the planned operation.  It was found I had breast cancer and the operation had to be postponed for quite a few months, he was ready to give me treatment to help alleviate pain until I was well enough to undergo another major orthopaedic operation.

It gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to praise both Fulwood Hall and Mr McLauchlan. During my consultation Mr McLauchlan made me feel relaxed, he listened to me fully and I feel he balanced concerns with risk fairly against the potential benefit, the operation was a complete success as he is in my opinion top class in his field, I was home on the third day and off crutches a few days later sleeping full nights.  The hospital was very clean and the food was good, the staff could not do enough for me night or day and with any issue at all, I would never want to go anywhere else. All the best and thanks again.

When I saw Mr McLauchlan at Fulwood Hall Hospital I was very happy with my consultation with him. I found his approach to be very straightforward and professional and I was confident in proceeding to knee replacement surgery.  I have been very pleased with my new knee and can’t believe how good it has been as it has given me a new lease of life. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr McLauchlan for orthopaedic surgery.

I had a knee arthoplasty undertaken by Mr McLauchlan on Friday 21st February 2020. Mr McLauchlan explained the complete procedure at my pre-operative appointment and again on the day of my operation. His jovial, pleasant caring persona made me feel comfortable and confident.
Since having my operation I have seen Mr McLauchlan once due to lockdown and have spoken to him via telephone. Each time I finished the conversation I have felt he understood me. I am pain-free in my knee and mobility is better. I cannot thank Mr McLauchlan enough for his pre- and post- attitude and attention to care.

I recommend Mr McLauchlan for hip operations.  He has replaced both of mine very successfully, the right hip first for NHS, the left one second for me as a private patient.  I chose Mr George McLauchlan on the strength of his reputation. I can’t commend Fulwood Hall and the operation too highly.  Super staff, good food, very clean premises.  The whole thing was first class.  Back home Sunday afternoon!!  The support from all sides was very satisfactory.  After the first operation I was walking unaided in a couple of weeks.  The left hip operation went even better than the first.  Two years on I still walk 7 or 8 miles regularly at the age of 75, with full movement and no discomfort. The organisation of both exercises was handled by Mr McLauchlan’s Private Secretary Val Matthews – prompt, efficient and very professional.  Although my knees are getting by at the moment, I know who to contact.

I’ve had these words in my head for days trying to reach a perfect conclusion, in order to send a letter to you, to thank you for the perfection I received from you at Fulwood Hall Hospital. It really was a special experience for me and I am grateful.  I have never known such efficiency, consideration and luxury.  I haven’t been in a hospital for years; this really was a great pleasure and surprise.  You instigated this with your support and guidance which I experienced at your consultation, of which the lovely Val Matthews informed me.  Everyone was efficient, delightful and caring, I felt like royalty! Thank you so much, you’ve made me happy and I do feel strong and i’m making a good recovery. Thank you.

It has been three years since you replaced my left hip.  As time goes by some people tend to forget important things that have happened in their life.  I can assure you there is never a days goes past that I don’t thank you in my mind. When people ask me how it is I can’t tell you much I put you up there as the best ever. I couldn’t walk from the bus to the beginning of town without stopping.  I now managed to play golf four times a week. I am now seventy-eight years old and my life was virtually finished without you performing the operation. I followed your instructions to the letter post-operation and was grateful for the result. To me, anything I am able to do for the rest of my life I owe to you. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.

I am very pleased to be able to write a testimonial for Mr McLauchlan, who was initially highly recommended to me by many.  I found him everything I expected him to be, and more, at the consultation.  He was extremely thorough and professional to the nth degree. He was very approachable and made me feel very comfortable, which gave me great confidence in his ability. I had a fantastic stay in Fulwood Hall Hospital and was fortunate enough to have the same nursing staff during both surgeries.  Also, the food was excellent, which can only be a bonus when in hospital to help with recovery. Before I had both hips replaced I was in a lot of pain, I couldn’t walk upstairs without crying and couldn’t play golf. Now, I am in no pain and have recently taken up bowls. I am delighted with the results and have nothing but the highest of praise for Mr McLauchlan and his team.

From the first time I met Mr McLauchlan at Fulwood Hall Hospital I was very impressed with his straight, no-nonsense honest and professional approach.  He fully explained the situation with regard to my knee and I appreciated his honesty about the expectations following surgery.  I am pleased to say that the outcome of the surgery was excellent, so much so that I am now due to have my other knee replaced shortly and made sure that Mr McLauchlan, once again, will perform the surgery. Everything and everyone at the hospital was brilliant, from the information I received, phone calls and everyone I came into contact with.  I would like to mention, in particular, Val Matthews, Mr McLauchlan’s Secretary for the compassion and understanding she has shown when arranging surgery dates to fit in with my personal circumstances.  Everyone in the Physiotherapy Department was very helpful; very honest and quite firm, which I needed, to give the good results we achieved. I am happy to recommend Mr McLauchlan and Fulwood Hall Hospital to anyone considering orthopaedic surgery.

I am 88 years old and reside in Burnley, Lancashire.   Mr McLauchlan replaced my right hip in January of this year followed by the left five months later. I am so glad to be back on my feet.  I never thought this would be possible as previously I could only go out in a wheelchair. Mr McLauchlan gave me the confidence to have the operations in spite of my health problems.  I am on Warfarin for a blood clotting condition and take tablets for a slight heart condition. Previously, I was given a negative outlook due to my age and aforementioned health problems.  There was also the added problem of the Covid 19 virus.  I felt the outlook was bleak. My niece’s husband had recently had his hip joint replaced by Mr McLauchlan and recommended I saw him myself; I was so glad that he did. When I first met Mr McLauchlan, I was treated with respect and he listened to me with great patience.  (In my experience I have found this not always to be the case when you are old.)  Before the consultation I had felt apprehensive but after speaking with Mr McLauchlan I felt confident. The care before and after the operation was great.  Many thanks to Mr McLauchlan and all the staff at Fulwood Hall.

Footnote: Due to my age and health my husband, a fit 88-year-old, did not think, in his words, that “I had a cat in hell’s chance” of having these operations.  He is delighted to have been proved wrong and to see me walking and pain-free.

Eleven weeks ago, I had a hip replacement performed by Mr George McLauchlan. My experience was very positive, and I am happy to recommend him to others. I was particularly impressed with his surgical skills and professional organisation.  He is very dependable and things happen when he says it will.  He has an excellent team to support patient care; these staff work conscientiously with him and everything is effectively communicated. Following surgery, the physiotherapists informed me about hip care and using crutches. They encouraged me to exercise several times every day, together with periods of rest and to eat well-balanced meals.  I followed all their advice and I have made an excellent recovery. My sincere thanks to Mr McLauchlan.  It feels so good to have my hip ‘pain free’!!

— Mrs Christine Moss
Right total hip replacement - 7.5.21

Before knee surgery I was in considerable pain and although I tried to keep fit I was more and more limited by the pain. Mr McLauchlan recommended unicompartmental knee surgery in my case. The right knee operation was in May 2019 and I recovered so well that within 5 months I was able to drive in America visiting and walking in a dozen or so National Parks, something I had wanted to do for years. The left knee deteriorated further and  in May 2021 Mr McLauchlan again operated and recovery was again a matter of weeks with no complications. It is now July and I have been driving and riding a bicycle even  since mid-June. I live alone and managed recovery with minimal help from friends. Mr McLauchlan inspires confidence , explains the procedure, reassures in a light-hearted way, and follows up with patients to ensure best practice always.  He is very knowledgeable and experienced in his field and when I had the NHS referral I chose Fulwood Hall Hospital and Mr McLauchlan on the recommendation of a friend who said , “I would not go anywhere else”.

Before I went to see Mr McLauchlan my symptoms were extreme pain in my right hip that was keeping me awake at night.  The pain was also affecting my quality of life as I was unable to go for long walks without experiencing pain. Also, daily tasks such as putting my sock on was difficult. At the consultation I found Mr McLauchlan to be extremely helpful and he fully explained everything to me.  I felt reassured and the surgery was planned. My stay in Fulwood Hall Hospital was very pleasant considering I had just had a major operation. I found the standard of care and support given to me to be excellent .Also the post operation physio was great. Since my surgery the outcome has been that I no longer experience pain in my right hip and daily life has improved tremendously. I would like to thank Mr McLauchlan and his staff for the successful surgery they undertook on me.

Having played various sports since school age, and for the last 30yrs squash, as I entered my 50s my body started to show signs of wear and tear. In particular, pain in my left hip and a limp had developed. My GP at the time referred me to a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and a replacement hip was recommended with little hope of playing squash again - I didn't proceed with that operation. Move forward to 2017. Still playing squash but only with the aid of pain killers before and after games for 24/48, a new address in a new town, a new GP and becoming a grandparent for the first time led me to reflect on my situation. Following various discussions with my GP I was referred to Mr McLauchlan. Meeting Mr McLauchlan for the first time was a reality check for me, x-rays revealed both hips were in poor condition and needed addressing.  Mr McLauchlan was very receptive to my potential concerns post-surgery and immediately sought to manage my expectations and focused on the reason for surgery, pain management. Following discussions on my work and lifestyle a choice of operations was presented; full hip replacement or a hip resurface, with the pros and cons of each clearly explained. My first hip resurfacing surgery was carried out in November 2017 at Fulwood Hall Hospital. Mr McLauchlan's team were friendly and professional. The operation was carried out within hours of admission, successfully and without any complications being discharged 3 days later. A second operation to resurface my right hip was carried out in February 2020, just prior to the Covid-19 pandemic reaching the UK. Fifteen months on I'm back playing squash, cycling 300 miles/month, and pain free. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr McLauchlan to anyone for any similar procedure.

I had my second knee replacement in May 2021 at Fulwood Hall hospital. I was kept informed of all stages of the procedure and received good care while in hospital and when leaving. You have to be prepared to follow all the exercise routines and to attend physio appointments. The end results are well worth it, able to walk pain free, and I go spinning 7 days a week for exercise, now discharged.

I recently underwent a total knee replacement, with Mr McLauchlan performing the surgery. The whole experience was positive. I received comprehensive information in respect of what was involved with the surgery and how to manage post-surgery expectations. 12 months down the line, I am totally pain-free, and I am able to enjoy walking and exercising as I wish.

Mr McLauchlan explained the procedure clearly and informed me of factors that might affect the total success of the operation. He listened to my questions and answered fully any concerns I had. After the operation, which in my case, was successful, I attended further appointments for check-ups and was given the opportunity to ask any other queries regarding recovery time etc. I found Mr McLauchlan’s manner to be friendly but professional, and he managed to put me at ease for something I wasn't looking forward to. I would recommend him to anyone needing surgery.

Right Knee Arthroscopic Meniscectomy – 27.7.21

This review relates to a recent Birmingham Hip Resurfacing Operation performed by Mr. McLauchlan at Fulwood Hall Hospital, provided by the NHS. From the outset I have found Mr. McLauchlan to be engaging, informative and open to detailed discussion about options, risks and benefits of proposed procedures. He appreciated my aspirations and future goals and helped me understand potential limitations to those goals as a consequence of the procedure. Throughout the process, I felt that Mr. McLauchlan had my interests at the heart of our discussions and tailored the solution to best suit my needs and situation. My experience of the procedure and post-operative care has been very positive. Although apprehensive, especially in respect of anaesthesia and my level of awareness of during the operation, Mr McLauchlan and his team were excellent and put me at ease throughout my stay in hospital. I was discharged approximately 24 hours post Op and provided with clear instructions regarding medication and next steps. Follow-up appointments for physio and dressing removal were scheduled efficiently and went without a hitch. My rehabilitation has gone very well, well I think so anyway. I am currently 12 weeks post op and have been able to recommence gym based exercise and reasonably strenuous cycling without any adverse reaction. Walking feels entirely normal, and I have no sensation whatsoever from the repaired hip joint. I am still somewhat limited in terms of lower back mobility, however I have been advised that this will take some time to recover as muscles, tendons and other soft tissue have been adversely affected through compensating for the previous underlying issues. I opted for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing as I am a relatively young patient, 51 at the time of the Op, and wish to continue being very active. I am a regular cyclist, riding around three times a week and also visit the gym a couple of times a week. Compound exercises such a squats, dead-lifts and cleans were impossible prior to the op, but it my ambition to be able to get back to completing this kind of exercise with confidence and good form in the future. Early indications are very positive, however I realise I need to be patient and evaluate where I am in the coming months, not weeks. In conclusion, I would absolutely advocate this procedure for younger, active individuals who aspire to get back to where they were, if not better. In Mr McLauchlan I found an extremely supportive, professional and competent surgeon who was able to give me a new lease of life; addressing not only the physical limitations I was enduring but also the psychological impact of being incapacitated at such a young age.

I had full Hip Replacement Surgery last year performed by Mr McLauchlan at Fulwood Hall Hospital and can only describe my experience as brilliant! I was treated with the upmost respect, I had never had surgery before, so was a little nervous, All staff made me feel at ease. No complications, so was In and out in within 36 hours, Without crutches after 10 Days. After care was excellent.
Would definitely recommend to anyone who has demised mobility and are lucky to be in a position to choose not to wait in pain for this treatment … Very grateful now pain free!

George McLauchlan performed a total knee replacement on my right knee in November 2021. He was polite, helpful and made sure I knew exactly what to expect and left me feeling confident that all was going to be fine (obviously it's a stressful time going into major joint surgery). The operation was a complete success and after a period of several week’s rehabilitation including physiotherapy my new knee was completely pain free and remains so to this day.

Unfortunately, my other knee started to cause me pain and I have surgery planned for a total knee replacement on this other knee in just over a week's time. I had absolutely no hesitation in deciding that I wanted Mr. McLauchlan to perform this operation, as I have complete confidence in his ability and admire his attitude to his patients.

Mr McLauchlan has performed hip resurfacing procedures on both of my hips, one in 2004 and one last Christmas, and I cannot praise him enough. He has a calm, reassuring manner, and manages to combine that with a friendliness that not all medical professionals are able to display. His expertise as a surgeon is quite simply second to none, on both occasions I made a swift and full recovery, and on the second occasion I was off crutches inside a week, and I was riding round on my bike inside a month. Contrast that with the months leading up to my surgery, when I could barely get upstairs. Special mention also has to go to his ever-efficient and really friendly PA, Val, who guided me through the pre-op process and really made me feel that I was the only patient on her desk. Thanks to both, and if you are reading this and are looking for a surgeon, then look no further.

Had my right hip replaced after many years of severe pain. I was fortunate enough to be added to Mr McLauchlan's list and met with him a number of times pre-op at Fulwood Hall. Mr McLauchlan was clear with the root cause of the problem and the required procedure to correct it. I attended Fulwood Hall and had the operation on a Friday and returned home on the Sunday. Quite simply put, it’s the best thing I have had done. I followed physio instructions, walked, exercised and after 1 month was back walking a few miles a day, after 4 months, was back skiing and after 10 months back climbing the odd mountain. I visited Mr McLauchlan once for >3 months and again >12 months, which included an x-ray. All good and I am now planning on doing the 4 peaks once more in the next 12 months. As far as Mr McLauchlan, I found him honest, clear and very transparent re success rates and what I'd be able to do post op (and what I needed to do in prep for pre-op!). From my personal experience, I lost 2 stone pre-op, the fitter you are pre-op the operation is easier and the recovery has a higher rate of success. I'd have absolutely no concerns if I had to go under the knife again under Mr McLauchlan's expertise...THANK YOU!

After x-rays showing the severity of osteoarthritis of my right hip, I finally decided to have hip surgery carried out.  After 3 years of valiantly trying physio, exercise and the help from supplements and Paracetamol, the pain had become unbearable.  I elected to have my operation done at Fulwood Hall Hospital – and what a great decision that was with fantastic treatment and a most excellent surgeon, Mr McLauchlan and anaesthetist Dr Azmat.

Prior to this, I had been researching different methods used for hip surgery.  I happened upon Andy Murray’s plight with his agonising career decision due to his hip pain, He then went on to have hip resurfacing which allowed him to continue with his career.  As I have a very active and sporting background, I was extremely interested in this procedure, but I was not aware of it being carried out in the UK.  So I resigned myself to a total hip replacement, which I knew would impose limitations upon desired activities.

When I first met Mr McLauchlan during his first consultation he instantly made me feel at ease, was very reassuring and as our discussion progressed I felt elated when he asked “what are your thoughts on hip resurfacing?”  It was comparable to an answered prayer!  I then elected for hip resurfacing.

During my time at Fulwood Hall Hospital, all members of the team who were looking after me were very kind, personable and extremely helpful.  The service and care provided by the team was outstanding – they have all been wonderful.

The physio post-op will be difficult (no pain, no gain) but I have had a great support team who have helped immensely to speed up my recovery no end!  I would definitely choose Fulwood Hall Hospital again, and I would highly recommend Mr McLauchlan to whoever needs orthopaedic surgery.  He is very personable, reassuring and straightforward with a great character.

I have had a very positive experience.

Right Hip Resurfacing 11.11.22

Mr McLauchlan performed a replacement knee for me and within a few weeks I had no pain in the joint for the first time in over 24 years, and I was able to walk normally without any walking aids. He also went the extra mile for me when I developed atrial fibrillation at the end of the operation and was transferred to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment. He came to the hospital twice to ensure I had sufficient pain relief and check on my progress. He reassured me when he visited the ward that he was being kept up to date on my progress and I would be brought back to Fulwood Hall as soon as I was made an outpatient. He explained that I was in a medical ward but was a surgical patient and the nursing staff had not the expertise or equipment to deal with my case.

I also found he made time at the follow-up appointment to enquire about my heart condition and also to explain questions I raised. I cannot praise his work enough, most of the time now I forget I have had the operation as the operated knee behaves the same as my other one.

Mr McLauchlan replaced my right knee in January 2022. I have faith in him after pre-operative consultations that reassured me of his first class treatment of patients. On completion of the operation he was one of the first people I spoke to when I was in recovery and he assured me that the operation was very successful. After physiotherapy I am now pain free in my right knee. However my left knee is now playing me up and I hope to see Mr McLauchlan again for advice. An excellent consultant. After many months suffering severe hip pain I saw George who immediately diagnosed that I needed a left hip replacement.  I only waited a few months and was admitted to Fulwood Hall Hospital.  The hospital and staff were great!  The operation went well and after a couple of days I was home.  George and his team were fantastic and the whole experience was great!  Whilst I was in a bit of pain I was soon walking without crutches.  After a few months I was back to normal walking, playing badminton etc.  If anyone would like to discuss my experience I would be happy to do so. Cheers!

I had a total knee replacement operation.  I can honestly say that it has made a massive different to my life!  I have my life back!  The care that I was given in the hospital was 100% perfect!  I was nervous about the operation but there was obviously no need to be as it was carried out with full care and attention.  Both the pre-op and post-op care was professional and personable.  I feel like my life has just begun!  Having a new knee has changed my life!  I can’t thank you enough.

I have had both hips replaced by Mr George McLauchlan.  He listened carefully to my history and concerns and then explained exactly what he could do in a way which made me feel confident about the procedure.  Both new hips have been very successful.  My abiding memory after the first operation was waking up and thinking “where’s the pain gone?” My recoveries were very quick and well monitored.  These two ops have given me a new lease of life.

I had my right hip replacement with surgeon Mr George J McLauchlan.  Absolutely excellent treatment with George McLauchlan.  Mine was tricky surgery but his professionalism saw me through.   My hip is great, I can walk, dance, run, no pain.  Cannot thank him enough and his Secretary for looking after my needs.

I have had a total replacement of both knees within five months of each other.  The procedures were carried out by Mr George McLauchlan and staff at Fulwood Hall Hospital.  Before the operations I found it difficult to pursue an active lifestyle.  Since the replacements I have a new lease of life.   I’m back at the gym, swimming and climbing mountains again.  Throughout my experiences I was treated with the utmost care and courtesy.    I made a quick recovery from both operations.   I would like to thank Mr McLauchlan and his colleagues for their efforts on my behalf and salute their expertise and professionalism throughout my time under their care.

Had my right hip replaced by Mr McLauchlan on the 19th January and less than six weeks later I have virtually no limp and I am swimming, riding my bike and able to drive my car.  So far absolutely fantastic.

Very successful knee replacement carried out at Fulwood Hall Hospital.  No adverse reports to make.  Very happy with all aspects of the treatment and care.

I had an appointment with Mr McLauchlan in October 2022 regarding my left hip.    I found Mr McLauchlan to be very professional.  There was no messing; he was straight to the point and told me the ins and outs of the operation.  I had my left hip replaced by him the next month.

The operation had gone so well that when I was having trouble with my right hip I arranged to see him again.   The following April I had my right hip replaced by Mr McLauchlan.

I am 72 years old, and I am like a new man!  I can now walk 10 miles, more if I want to, where I could only walk about 150 yards before my operations.

I would have no hesitation in recommended Mr McLauchlan to anyone who needed hip replacement surgery.

I have had 2 hip replacement operations done by Mr McLauchlan at Fulwood Hall.  Both successful.  I was discharged the following day and after four weeks I had resumed all my normal activities.  I can highly recommend Mr McLauchlan who is very professional, thorough and friendly.

I met Mr McLauchlan for my consultation at Fulwood Hall Hospital.  He confirmed that I needed an operation for a replacement hip.  Later that day I was given a date for my operation.  All went to plan and I was well informed from start to finish about my care and the procedure.  The after care was excellent and gradually I began to recover fully.  One year post op I was seen again.  I was asked how I had been and I said I felt that my new hip was my own and that I had no recurrence of pain or discomfort.  After an x-ray, which proved that my new hip was fine, I was discharged.  The whole experience was life changing for me.  I felt that I had got my mobility back.  I was treated with respect and dignity.  I could not thank him enough for his professionalism in the whole procedure.

I had been suffering with deterioration of my right knee for many years following a sporting injury as a youngster.  After seeing Mr McLauchlan I took his advice and decided to have total right knee replacement in February 2023.  I was apprehensive as I am self-employed but Mr McLauchlan put me at ease and helped give me the confidence to make the decsion to go ahead.  I needed not to worry, since the operation I have made a full recovery.  Following the post operation advice and exercise schedule, I was back to work in three weeks mainly in the office but I was able to do most things within six weeks.  Twelve months on I am now out of pain and able to do things I could not have imagined previously.  It has certainly helped change my life for the better and I am most grateful to Mr McLauchlan for his skill and professionalism.  I would not hesitate to recommend Mr McLauchlan to any future patient.
